It's a long article but worth a read if you are one of the many Chathamites concerned with getting broadband...

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A259848

Chathamcentric excerpts:

Speaker of the House Joe Hackney, a Democrat from Chatham County, said individuals contact his office about lack of broadband more than any other issue.

In the same way a congressman might shepherd a visa application though the State Department, Hackney and his staff intervene on behalf of would-be broadband customers by calling Embarq, the phone company that serves Chatham County, to determine whether there's an access point nearby and when service will become available. Hackney estimated his office has helped dozens of constituents over the years.

"It is very satisfying when you're able to help somebody with it," he said, "because it allows them to work from home and changes their life."

[..snip..]

One of the people calling Speaker Hackney's office is Joseph O'Brien, a 26-year-old resident of Silk Hope, an unincorporated community in Chatham County. O'Brien has organized a petition signed by more than 70 of his neighbors asking Embarq to extend DSL service to their homes.

"Most people here have dial-up, and they hate it," O'Brien said. It's more expensive than DSL, in fact, if you pay for a dedicated phone line. "You have people literally paying more for less. ....

Downtown Sanford now under Wi-Fi cloud

http://billyliggett.wordpress.com/2008/06/04/downtown-sanford-now-under-wi-fi-cloud/

SANFORD — Really want to go see that bluegrass band playing Depot Park tonight, but know you will be swamped with work?

Now you can do both. Thanks to a somewhat happy accident, wireless Internet is available at the park and throughout downtown.

Lee County recently installed a microwave wireless connection to increase bandwidth from the government center on Hillcrest Drive to the Lee County Board of Elections down Steele Street.

As a result of the upgrade, the county was able to add an access point atop a building on Chatham Street at no cost to taxpayers that made wireless connectivity available on Steele, Moore and Chatham streets between Carthage and Wicker streets — the heart of downtown — and, perhaps most importantly, Depot Park.

The county partnered with Downtown Sanford Inc. and Progressive Contracting, which owns the building where the access point sits, to make wireless connectivity possible.

I live in north Chatham County and have Time-Warner (Roadrunner) cable modem.  I assumed Time-Warner was just about everywhere due to people having to have their cable TV. Maybe T-W offers TV some places but not its cable modem service?  Anyway, I don't take the cable TV -- when would I ever watch it with all the time I spend on the Internet?

Time Warner cable is completely absent in just about every rural part of the county.  No TV, and certainly no internet.  Most of the county gets its TV from Dish or DirecTV
