Despite the historic charm and walkable feel of Pittsboro, its streets tend to favor cars and trucks over walkers and bicyclists.  As a test, pick a location in downtown and try to find a continuous loop (anywhere, even around a block) with a sidewalk and safe street crossings.

This problem will be the focus of a workshop Wednesday. Pittsboro residents are encouraged to attend a public workshop 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 30 at the Pittsboro Town Hall to provide input for a Pittsboro pedestrian plan.  Greenways, Inc. is developing the plan under the direction of the Pittsboro Planning Department and NC DOT and other groups. Suggestions from community members are a crucial factor in determining the final plan. The final plan will analyze existing conditions for pedestrians, summarize preferences of community members, and consider policies to improve the walkability of Pittsboro.  The plan will also provide short and long term recommendations for making the town’s streets and intersections safer for pedestrians.

Just a reminder that tonight, Wednesday, July 30, 6-8 p.m., Pittsboro people will be meeting at the Town Hall on East Street to discuss how to make Pittsboro more walker friendly. The Town wants citizens to come and give their opinions on where sidewalks are a priority as they put together a 'pedestrian plan.'
