Shearon Harris plant shut down (Am I just overreacting? or should we be contacted about this kinda stuff-but probably goes on all the time) Undecided

The Shearon Harris nuclear plant was shut down early Monday after inspectors found a leaky seal in the plant's condenser.

Crews were working to repair the seal, which was discovered at about 1 a.m. Monday, but it was unclear Tuesday how long the plant would remain offline, Progress Energy spokeswoman Julia Milstead said.

The condenser converts steam that has been used to generate electricity back into water so it can be reheated by the reactor, Milstead said. The unit – and the leaky seal – is completely separate from the nuclear material at the plant, she said.

The shutdown won't affect Progress Energy's ability to provide electricity to customers, company officials said.

If there was a danger to the public I think people should be notified, but since this is completely a maintenance issue and not a matter of public safety I don't think widespread notification is necessary.

Fire up the air raid sirens boys, we've got a leaky seal!

Nah, that just seems like it would do more harm than good.

But unfortunately there are groups out there that blow repair issues like this out of proportion. I for one am glad Progress Energy is using nuclear power for the production of electricity.

About my neighbor the nuke plant,
Shutting down for maintainance is part of being prepare and aware. This according to my information this is routine.  Also , my radio would alarm me if anything out of the ordinary was occurring.

Pumpkin,

Do you really expect a large corporate parent company to "alarm" you?   As long as you trust in the purveyor of the message than you will feel safe.

Keeping folks calm is part of the PR strategy.  (Whether the message is 100% accurate is another question altogether.)

Fixing leaky seals are hardly "routine maintenance."

Anyone remember Three Mile Island?  I'm sure the PA company that ran them said their towers were safe also.

It's not, seals last indefinetely?

Anyone remember there are >100 reactors operating currently?  I'm sure that people against them said they will cause the end of civilization also.

Chernobyl didn't cause the end of civilization, but it sure wrecked havoc on Europe.

You are absolutely right.  Of course in the world, there about 450 reactors, so it really is a small percentage.

If you really want to worry about something, I would pick cars.  Them things are dangerous.

Butterbean you need to go visit the nuke plant.  They will be glad to show you how well prepared they are for emergencies.  I will get warned because they rent space from for a siren.  Go scare someone else.
