These parties are happening all over NC. I have had conversations with teens and their parents about what is happening at these parties. Sounds a lot like what happened at the 'secret' parties of my youth. The parents kind of know what is happening but are beguiled by their "innocent" children into letting them attend. Many times the parents don't even know anything about it till things go wrong. The most disturbing part of my conversations about these types of parties is the obvious intent of many participants to "fight" someone. Kids are going to these parties to socialize, get high, kick butt and watch other youths kick butt. It is part of the youth culture, I am sad to say. As a frequent victom of this type of violent behavior, I can say that it is discouraging to those who don't want to fight, or watch fights or get killed. Socializing and getting high (on whatever) could be a happy loving thing but unfortunately the kinds of drugs moving about now are not conducive to responsible and kind behavior. Stop the parties happening at the fairgrounds the same way all parties are stopped in Chatham County. Move in the law and start taking names. The bad guys will disperse (no doubt to the after party at a parent vacant house), the good guys will stay and behave. How about responsible gun control as well. Where do these gangstas get their guns? FROM THEIR PARENTS! Any young person today should enjoy the same privileges that I did. You can do what you want until you get caught doing something that hurts someone else or presents a clear danger. The knowledge that I could spend the night in the drunk tank while my Dad taught me a lesson about such places and the behaviors that could land me there was a great deterrent during my youth. It was laid out plain and simple. Unfortunately, the youth of today have lost that long term awareness of "messing up" and are increasingly making choices that have long term consequences (like shooting gun in a parking lot) without meaningful consequences. This party thing in PBO will continue until there are real consequences for negative behavior. Parents have a huge responsibility in this situation.
We have met the enemy and it is us.

The police chief spoke at the Town Board meeting this week, about the parties at the fairgrounds. He said that he was having one extra officer on duty the night of these parties....I don't think it was a big expense, maybe $70 or something, and the officer was there mainly to patrol the area near the Food Lion parking lot. Commissioner Chris Walker asked why the Town was footing the bill for the extra security at all. The Chief said it was the Police Dept.'s decision to add the officer...and the promoter already had two off-duty officers hired to work the door. When asked if there was any precedent for taxpayers footing the bill for security related to parties, Town Manager Bill Terry said that when he worked for the Town of Chapel Hill, the Town would pay for extra security on Halloween night when thousands of people showed up for a party downtown.

The Franklin Street party on Halloween seems a bit different. I believe in that case it is not an organized "party" but rather a bunch of people showing up on a public street, right? Notably I don't believe anyone makes money off admission to Franklin Street on Halloween.

Have there been any objections by the shopping center management for the parking lot being used for this function? As well, any of the stores located there having any concerns? I realize most are closed in the later hours of the party, but often times large gatherings of people lead to vandalism etc.

What in the world is wrong with tax payers footing the bill of maybe $70.00 for extra security by the sheriffs department? I would rather pay the extra and be sure there is security for the kids that are there, then have to pay later if something was to happen. There has to be a place for kids to hang out, dance and socialize.
All of you posting and thinking there will be drugs, guns, sex (oh my) I would think would be glad to have the extra security there!

and your point is? He makes money and is taking his time to make sure there is security for the event.
I wouldn't want to take that responsibility and make that little amount of money for Friday dances for kids. Glad there is security and we tax payers are paying for it.

Hey, it's football season Friday nights in Pittsboro, that will draw the crowds away from the Friday night parties. Football, OH YEA Though I think NHS may struggle this season a little from loosing some graduating key players. Love the new entrance/exit being made at NHS

How little money is he making? Wolfie, I thought they were talking about the $70.... maybe not....what is the admission? How much is the rent on the building? then he has to pay the security people...I don't think he is going to make his first million on these parties...after expenses that is.

Somewhere earlier in the discussion Bill mentioned a $5 admission and the sponsor mentioned the building capacity was 250 but the most tickets sold was 226.

I was curious if he is making enough to cover the security needs the chief of police thinks is necessary. $70 might not sound like much for the tax payers, but over a year it can add up, esp. for a small town police force that already is being stretched by high gas prices. The police could start writing tickets for loitering at the Food Lion parking lot. It would keep the crowds down there and make a little money for the town to offset the 70 bucks for the police presence.
