Could you imagine the local small business boom if Walmart did close and rid cities of some of these huge chains that has destroyed to local small business enterprises!   Mind boggling

Unfortunately, that is one of their trademarks that occurs (Gorilla, that puts small business out of biz.  But those small biz people never get to return post gorilla stomp). Walmart has "created" and then vacated more than one shopping center. I am not a "frequent flyer" there. They have some ok points, but developed some nasty business points as well, that I do not like.

It is pretty pathetic that a member of this board openly hopes another member loses his job.

You're correct. I misread a previous post.

Don't blame Wal-Mart, blame the people that shop there.  If people didn't shop there, they would close.

Randy, before WalMart you could not find what you needed in Siler and if you did it was super expensive. Some of the businesses that closed need to. Roses was a joke and Lowes Food was really never shopped anyway. Many of the other businesses remain. Siler has specialty stores: Southern States, Farmers Alliance, Ace Hardware, Radio Shack and many more. As I stated in an earlier post, I don't like Wal Mart because of the poor quality of some products and the poor customer service but I do like that I can get what I need without having to make a special trip to Asheboro or Burlington.

Siler stores continue to grow even after WalMart came. Auto Zone, OReilly's, Smithfields and  Wendy's just to name a few. Having the WalMart also attracts customers from Ramseur and Liberty too, bringing their tax money into the county.

So next time you bash Wal Mart please look at the whole picture.

The biggest hit to Siler's economy IMO was when the 421 bypass opened, but that is a different thread.

Siler City first became victim of loss of manufacturing jobs, like a lot of small town America. Long ago it was a vibrant town (WHY, there are multiple blocks of "downtown" buildings). Boling Chair, Collins and Aikman etc. etc. JOBS. Chickens were about the only thing that didn't offshore. You couldn't maybe find everything you wanted there years ago, but probably could find most of what you truly needed then and the small business owners were jewels Smiley
It wasn't about chain food joints, it was Brownie Lou's, Copper Penny, Bill's Grill, Johnson's, Mayberry Ice Cream/Sandwich and others. Home grown folks, food and service.
Back to Wallyworld, from what I saw on a tube blip this AM, they are not opening as many new stores this year, plan to remodel some, but no major cut backs overall. They seem to think the sour economy is sending people packing their direction to save the pennies. They admitted they were going to do early reductions on toys etc. to try to score big foot sales from Santa, I guess (and crush the other retail "elves".

It's about price to a lot of people, and that is just a plain fact.  If it wasn't, Wal-Mart would go out business.  Not many people go there for the customer service.

I don't go there much at all.

I do think they have done some nasty things, however to employees in the later years and part of why I don't go there for basics. Sort of a back at ya maybe...

I don't go their because every time I go just to get some basic toiletry's, shaving cream, deodorant, ect, I end up spending a hundred bucks.  I just go to Sam's Club every couple weeks cause I seem to get more for my buck plus I get fed for free by the time I get through the sampling Grin
