Has anyone heard anything about the Siler City Wal-Mart closing after the 1st of the year?

That store is so busy I would be very suprised if it did. Probably just an ugly rumor.

I haven't heard the rumor, but I do believe that business has slacked off there.  I know they have significantly decreased the amount of inventory they keep.

Could you imagine the local small business boom if Walmart did close and rid cities of some of these huge chains that has destroyed to local small business enterprises!   Mind boggling

How many people are employed at the Wal-Mart?

I agree, but at what costs has Walmarts and their products from overseas caused American jobs.  Local business would hire them up as their business would grow.  But I do see your point, but so many of these super stores have put thousands out of work, either in retail or industrial jobs

I've heard there have been quite a few lay offs at WalMart in Siler City and possibly more on the way. I hadn't heard any rumor of it closing, though.

Can you imagine how much the cost of goods would rise for a lot of people that live paycheck to paycheck already?

At a time like this you hate for people to lose that low-cost option.  Personally I prefer to shop locally, organically etc and spend a bit more, but how many people literally can't afford that right now?

I believe the rise in cost of goods would be a very temporary situation, if it happened at all.  There are still the other stores in the area that are smaller, but still have great deals.  I do everything I can now to keep from buying at Walmart.  I do end up driving all over Siler City, but to me it's worth it.  From a long term growth perspective, I believe Walmart actually hurts an area, and I wouldn't be too sad to see it disappear.  Of course, on the other side of the coin, I realize that Walmart does employ quite a few people in the area.  I have a feeling though, that with the increased business from the other stores they would need to hire additional people to handle the business as a previous poster suggested.

I am not a Wal Mart fan at all, at any of their stores. I have found many of their products to be inferior and junky, they have less than desirable customer service.

Now, that being said:

Before Wal Mart came to Siler it was very hard to find what you needed in town especially at night and on the weekends. How many times do children remember they need something for school on a Sunday? What about if you need a plumbing item and Ace Hardware is closed? How about an electronic item no one else in town carries? It is 30 minutes to Asheboro or Burlington and you gauged your trip by that. Fortunately Lowes is in Pittsboro so the plumbing item is easier to get but that is still an hour round trip.

Wal Mart may be the store of choice for many and may not be the store of choice for others but it is there when needed.

My sister works at walmart and they have laid off several and they are only getting about 24 hrs a week work. I hope walmart doesn't close and I would be quite surprised if they did. I know I save money shopping there for dog food, groceries etc.

Hello everyone, after reading this thread I felt that I needed to reply.  As many of you know I work at wal-mart, and believe me I seriously doubt that a closure in the immediate future will occur.  I have yet to hear anyone mention the possibility of it, nor have I seen anything that would make me believe otherwise.  As far as the layoffs go at our store, yes some people were unfortunately let go but our store from what I have heard was not the only one to have layoffs.  At the moment I believe our store is doing well considering the economic instability, and I personally hope that it stays open for many years to come, because at the moment Siler City needs Wal-mart it does provide people in the community with jobs (aprox 250-300 employees), a place to shop, as well as much needed sales tax revenue.  Finally just to note in the past year I have heard the following about business in Siler City; Wendys was supposed to close......Sonic was supposed to close......Auto zone was supposed to close.....and now Wal-mart...
my point is that instead of continuing rumors we should contact a reputable source such as a corporate office and just ask before we continue to pass questionable information along to others.
