I just got an automated phone call from Chatham County Schools.  My daughter is receiving an award tommorrow at 1 pm at Horton Middle School.  This is the first I have heard of it and I am very excited to attend.  I am not sure why my 4 year old is receiving an award, but I bet it has something to do with her intelligence.  She is very bright.

At the school board meeting last night, a minority achievement award event was announced for Saturday, Nov 15.  This is what we got today from Bonlee School: http://ds1.chatham.k12.nc.us/bonlee.nsf?OpenDatabase.  Last night they said Horton was having the one at 1 while the J-M one was at 10.

Congratulations, Wolfpack Fan.

I went to the Minority Student Achievement Award Celebration at Horton this afternoon. The multipurpose room was full, with students and family members from Horton, Pittsboro Elementary, Moncure, Perry Harrison and North Chatham. Minority students (African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American) who achieved a 3 or 4 on their end of grade tests (grades 3-8) for 2007-2008 were recognized and given a medal. Mr. Logan gave a short talk based on the 11 rules Bill Gates presented in a speech to high school students. (Number 1, life is not fair. Number 11, be nice to nerds; you'll probably work for one someday.) He also quizzed the students on current famous minorities (Tiger Woods, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah, Bill Richardson, Colin Powell, Barack Obama) with the first to know the name getting a lollipop wrapped in a dollar bill. The students were proud as they said their name, shook hands with Mr. Logan, Holly Duncan (representing the school board), and their principal to applause from the audience. The Horton saxophone quintet also played. A number of central office personnel and school board member-elect Flint O'brien also attended.

A similar ceremony was held this morning for the western part of the county. I spoke with Mr. Logan and several people from the central office and they said it was well attended as well.

This is the fourth year of these ceremonies. They are sponsored by the district's Raising Achievement/Closing the Gap task force, as a way of encouraging achievement by minority students. Last school year, the task force held a series of community meetings in local churches to get feedback from parents on their suggestions to reduce the gap in achievement between whites and minority students in the county.

Next Tuesday night, November 18, at 7 pm at Horton, the task force (and anyone from the community interested in being a part of this) will meet to make plans for this year. I look forward to seeing many of you at that meeting.
