Chatham Central wins Red Cross award

Bear Creek - On Wednesday, November 12, Chatham Central High School received an award from the American Red Cross for the Best Overall High School Blood Drive Sponsor in the Durham Service Area, which encompasses fourteen counties including Durham, Wake, and Orange.

Over a period of two school years and four blood drives, the blood drives at Chatham Central collected 430 units. The Senior Beta Club chapter at Chatham Central sponsors the school blood drives.

The award criteria was:
1) percentage of school participation;
2) drive growth from year to year; and
3) overall production of units

Jennifer Port, Donor Recruitment Representative for the Durham Service Area of the American Red Cross, noted that the strong sense of community support for the blood drives played an integral role in the outstanding success of blood drives at Chatham Central. She commented that over 1,300 lives had been touched by the 430 unit donation.

“It is an honor to work with a group of students who put the needs of their community above their own by giving so generously of their time and effort to make these blood drives successful each year. This award truly embodies the spirit of our students here at Chatham Central,” said Mitch Stensland, Principal.

Chatham Central will hold its next blood drive on Tuesday, November 25, from 7:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Contact a Senior Beta Club member to make an appointment.

Northwood High School will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, December 2. Jordan-Matthews High School held a blood drive earlier this fall.
