Northwood Next Up For Rams

By Steve Williams

In Reidsville's first two playoff games, opposing quarterbacks have completed almost as many passes to Reidsville defenders as they have to their intended targets. West Stanly and North Pitt combined on just 5 of 15 with 4 interceptions in blowout losses.
Pittsboro Northwood, Reidsville's opponent for the third round, will provide the RHS secondary considerably more to think about.
Charger quarterback Sam Griffin completed 13 of 21 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown in Northwood's 21-14 victory over West Stokes Friday night. Those passes found six different receivers but his go-to target is Ridge Smith, a speedy junior who had a 16-yard TD catch Friday night.
He also likes to go to A.J. Farmer.
Demetrius Johnson leads the Chargers' running game. He had an 18-yard TD against West Stokes and ended with 101 yards on 18 carries. In the first-round 36-7 win over Eastern Guilford, he posted 187 yards and four touchdowns rushing.
Northwood will bring a four-game winning steak and an 11-2 record to Reidsville. The Rams will be the third straight member of the North State 2-A Conference the Chargers have faced.
Northwood's last loss was a 31-26 home setback against Hillsborough Orange in a Mid-State 2-A Conference game. That result left Northwood and Orange as co-champions of the conference but Orange got the higher seed for the playoffs. The Chargers are the lone remaining representative from the Mid-State Conference as both Orange and Cardinal Gibbons were eliminated in the second round and Burlington Cummings and Graham lost in the first round.
Other than the loss to Orange, the Chargers' only other setback was 34-10 to Siler City Jordan Matthews the third week of the season.
The regular season victories were over East Chapel Hill (48-14), Western Harnett (20-18), Lee County (35-21), Chatham Central (63-7), Carrboro (48-30), Graham (35-27), Cummings (7-0 in overtime), Cedar Ridge (25-14) and Cardinal Gibbons (28-24).
NOTEBOOK
• The winner of the Reidsville-Northwood game will face the winner of Forest Hills (10-3) vs. South Brunswick (10-2) for the Eastern Regional Championship. In the Western Regional, it's East Henderson (12-1) vs. Hibriten (12-1) and East Lincoln (12-1) vs. Bandys (7-6). Bandys upset Shelby Friday night, ending the possibility of a Reidsville-Shelby rematch for the state championship.
• Reidsville and Northwood have met once before in the playoffs. In an opening round game in 2004, Reidsville won 41-7.
• In realignment for 2009, Northwood will move to a split 2-A/1-A confernce with Granville Central, South Granville, Durham School of the Arts, Carrboro, Cedar Ridge, River Mill Academy, N.C. School of Science and Math and Raleigh Charter.
• In the current ADM numbers used to determine the playoff divisions, Northwood had 1,005 students and Reidsville 934.

No doubt about it.  Friday is going to be the Charger's most significant test this season.  Hands Down.

Every undefeated team is vulnerable.  That is why you play the game.

GO CHARGERS !

Community Stadium in Reidsville, NC

Reidsville lays claim to being the High School Football capital of N.C. because they have collected 16 state championships.  Note, however, that  a lot of them were in the 20's, 30's and 40's.

Their football team is a heritage rich team that is well trained, well prepared, and are coached to do whatever it takes to win. (read in to that what you like)   The team enjoys a level of complete support from the school system, alumni, and the entire community, that is among the very best in the nation, not just NC.

It will take a special effort and superb execution by our coaching staff and our young men to win this game.   It is possible.  Again, that is why you play the game.

Go Chargers!

Hi everyone,

A group of parents is trying to generate some additional fan support for the upcoming game this Friday.    Anyone interested in riding on a CCS Activity bus to Reidsville and back for the game?

The details are still being worked out, but approval has been given. We need about 40 people for each bus and with that, it will cost about $5.00 per person for the roundtrip.   Not a bad deal.

Drivers are volunteers at no cost and the bus fee of $1.50 per mile is what the CCS will charge.------it is about 70 miles up and 70 miles back.

Anyway, if you are interested and would like to sign up, PM me by Wednesday noon.

I’ll copy this on a new thread for simplicity.

Thanks

We left with 6 minutes.

It was 41-20...I think.

Northwood had a good crowd supporting them.  The defense just couldn't stop these fast little guys from Rville.

I was surprised to see our award winning band couldn't make it.  Could have used their support.

Thank You Chargers!  You have a great deal to be holding your heads up about.  Good Season.  Well Done.

Rams Advance To Regional Finals

It may not have been an artistic masterpiece but it was a win nonetheless.

The Reidsville Rams overcome 142 yards in penalties behind a powerful running game to turn back a determined Northwood, and post a 48-20 win over the Chargers in the third round of the NCHSAA 2-AA East playoffs Friday night in Community Stadium.

The win, the 30th straight for Reidsville and 14th this season without a loss, advances the Rams to the regional finals Dec. 5 in Community Stadium. Forest Hills will provide the opposition after its 35-14 win over West Brunswick in the other regional semifinal game.

Reidsville racked up 373 yards rushing Friday with E.J. Foster leading the way with 137 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Tyrell Houghton had 102 yards on nine totes and three scores, and Aaron Easton added 98 yards on seven tries and a touchdown.

Houghton was 3 of 7 passing for 48 yards, which included a 20-yard TD strike to Jarrett Barnett. Kenzel Doe had two catches for 28 yards.

Mike Stacey had a team-best 11 tackles while Steve Williams had 10. Stacey, Bryran Johnson, and Kenneth Covington had sacks. Johnson and Houghton had interceptions, and Johnson added a fumble recovery.

Charger quarterback Sam Griffin completed 13 of 30 passes for 139 yards, but was sacked three times for 15 yards in losses. A.J. Farmer had five of those receptions for 73 yards, and Ryan Epps had four for 49 yards.

Northwood opened the game with a 19-play, 8:52 drive that was aided by three defensive penalties on Reidsville. The possession reached second-and-goal at the Ram one, but it stalled there and Andrew Easterling hooked a 23-yard field goal with 3:08 left in the first.

Reidsville needed just eight plays and 3:58 to cover the 80 yds, as Barnett got the payoff with a 20-yard leaping catch of a Houghton pass in the end zone. A.J. Williams booted the PAT for a 7-0 RHS lead.

The Rams got on the board again with 6:38 left in the half with Houghton getting the payoff from 10 yards out. Williams' PAT made it a 14-0 game.

Johnson's fumble recovery at the Northwood 36 set up a two-play RHS drive that ended with a 34-yard scoring run by Houghton and a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Reidsville's quick strike offense needed just three plays and 44 seconds to cover 55 yards after the second half kick. Easton ran for 30 on first down and Houghton carried for seven before Foster finished it off from the 18 for a 28-0 Ram lead.

The Chargers finally got on the board with an 11-play, 61-yard penalty aided possession that culminated with a three-yard scoring run by Ridge Smith.

Houghton then muffed the ensuing kickoff, and Darcus Elliott recovered for Northwood at the RHS three. Demetrius Johnson scored two plays later and a PAT pass from Griffin to Smith suddenly cut the Ram lead to 28-14 with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

Reidsville then stretched the lead back to 35-14 on a 21-yard scoring run by Easton that was set up by a nifty punt return by Lyshod Graves.

But, the Chargers refused to go away.

Griffin's arm and feet sparked another Northwood drive that covered 67 yards in 13 plays with Johnson reaching the end zone with 11:20 left in the game. The two-point try failed leaving the Chargers with a 35-20 deficit.

Just as quick as Northwood got back in the game, the Rams put it away that much quicker.

Hougton turned on the jets on a 35-yard scoring run with 9:29 left, and a 20-yard run by Foster with 4:32 left in the game set the final margin.

The Dec. 5 showdown with Forest Hills will be Reidsville's seventh straight trip to the regional finals. The Rams won regional championships in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007 and went on to win state titles three of those years (02, 03, 07). The only regional losses were to Western Alamance (04) and Burlington Cummings (06). The loss to Cummings in 2006 marks the last time the Rams lost a game.

Good report, Everett.

Thanks, Northwood, for showing off our little town and your school.  Your team did us all proud even though some of us have no children in the school - yet.

Amen. At the seasons beginning, Coach Hall and his assistants were wondering how they would replace 22 seniors (from 43 on last years varsity). They had some JV players step up, as well as some upperclassmen that didn't play last year. Coach Hall and staff changed the schemes from a running attack to a passing attack and off we were. Coach Harrington molded the defense into a tough group. They really seemed to gell during the Lee Senior game. We won 11 games when most folks struggled to find 4 winnable games based on the personnel losses.
We scored more points against Reidsville last night than any team has this year. They had not given up 100 yards in passing to any team before last night either.
The fact that we were able to hang as well as we did with Reidsville when we in the middle of a "rebuilding year" speaks volumes about the quality of the coaching staff at Northwood. Combine that with the parental support, the quality of our band program, and facility improvements, and we've got something good going on in PBO.
Thanks for a great season Coach Hall and Staff! Thank you for all of the long hours of hard work Northwood Charger players, trainers, cheerleaders, band members, concession workers, and anyone else I might have missed! And Chandler, Herbie and Mr Blice!

Reidsville knocks off pesky Pittsboro NorthwoodSaturday, November 29 (updated 6:46 am)
By Brad Howell
Staff Writer
REIDSVILLE -- Friday night's 2-AA quarterfinal playoff game began with a scare for the Reidsville Rams, but by halftime, the thought of ending "the streak" was a distant memory.

Reidsville (14-0) held off a pesky Pittsboro Northwood squad 48-20 to extend the state's longest winning streak to 30 games and bring the Rams a step closer to their 17th state title.

The top-seeded Rams cruised to a 21-0 lead at intermission behind three touchdowns from junior quarterback Tyrell Houghton. Jarrett Barnett caught a 20-yard touchdown pass on the Rams' first possession and Houghton rumbled for scoring runs of 11 and 35 yards, respectively, on their next two drives.

Northwood (11-3) opened the game with a 17-play drive that chewed 8:56 off the clock, but a fumbled snap at the Reidsville 4 stalled the drive and the Chargers played catch-up the rest of the way.

"Definitely were challenged," Reidsville coach Jimmy Teague said. "That's the most points we've allowed all year but the important thing at this stage is to move on to the next round."

Reidsville, entered third in the state in scoring (45.3 points per game) and also third in points allowed (5.77 ppg), regardless of classification.

The Rams flexed their muscles offensively, totaling 373 yards on the ground, but struggled at times with Northwood's passing attack.

The fourth-seeded Chargers found some success through the air, especially over the middle of the field. Northwood's first sustained drive came toward the end of the first half, but Reidsville defensive lineman Bryon Johnson intercepted Sam Griffin's screen pass to thwart the Chargers' threat.

Reidsville tacked on another touchdown -- a 17-yard run by E.J. Foster -- to open the third quarter, but the Chargers struck back with two scores over the next 67 seconds.

Two Reidsville pass interference penalties kept Northwood's next drive alive, and Ridge Smith scored on a 3-yard run to get the Chargers on the board. Reidsville had four pass interference penalties and were whistled for 142 yards total.

Houghton fumbled the ensuing kickoff deep in his own territory to set up another Northwood touchdown to make it 28-14 with 7:51 left in the third.

But the Chargers had no answer defensively, as Reidsville scored again with three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter on Aaron Easton's 21-yard burst through the middle.

Houghton added his fourth TD early with just over 9 minutes left to make it 41-20.

The Rams have outscored opponents 637-95 this season (156-26 in the playoffs) and will host No. 2 seed Forest Hills (11-3) next week.

If the award winning band could come out for the next away third round playoff game, that would be great.  They were greatly missed.
